AMERICA: OUR STORIES THROUGH THE CLASSICS
 A SPECIAL COMMISSIONING  PROJECT

PictureAmina Henry
Hero Theatre launches a new play commissioning project, AMERICA: Our Stories Through The Classics. We asked some of America's most exciting voices to adapt a classic work to reflect America today.  Below are our three recent commissions:

TROY by Amina Henry

Holly lives with her daughters on Troy Street, waiting for one of her sons to come home from war. When Holly's landlord Manny serves her an eviction notice, Holly struggles to maintain her hope and dignity even as she attempts to deal with her inability to pay her back rent. At the same time, her daughters and her neighbor struggle with their own questions about life, love and the ability to endure. In this contemporary re-imagining of Euripides' classic play The Trojan Women, the people of Troy Street fight to remain human in an increasingly inhuman world. Playwright Amina Henry brings us this exciting new play inspired by true stories of homelessness due to gentrification in America today.

OUT OF THE ASHES by Candido Tirado
An old guard politician tries to hold on to power when change is in the air, as a young politician threatens his legacy. OUT OF THE ASHES by Candido Tirado is an original adaptation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar set in Newark, NJ, Inspired by the rise of (former Newark mayor) Senator Cory Booker, OUT OF THE ASHES brings us the story of a city's residents struggling to maintain their identities amidst their city's evolving political regime.

STEVE PARK, a solo show
From In Living Color to working with the Coen Brothers and Spike Lee, celebrated comedian and actor Steve Park chronicles his journey as an actor in this biographical one-man show. The son of Korean immigrants, Park began his career as a stand-up comedian. In 1997, Park wrote a well known mission statement in which he called for Hollywood to portray people of Asian descent in a less disparaging light. His one-man show is inspired by Hero Theatre's GoPro video project where he was interviewed. Click on this link to watch!
