A CELEBRATION  OF IRENE

On May 14, 2019 at 7pm, Irene's birthday, some of Irene's students, close friends, colleagues and other theatre practitioners gathered to celebrate her. "Tonight, on her 89th birthday, we celebrate the artist and teacher, director and writer, auteur and innovator. A mentor and tormentor to all who knew her. A truthteller and truth-maker. A warrior in a male-dominated theater landscape. The mother of Modern Experimental Playwriting." - Migdalia Cruz.

*Memorial photos were taken by Giovanni Solis. Slideshow below, presented in honor of Irene, was curated by Gabe Figueroa.

FESTIVAL IRENE

In 2016 Hero Theatre produced a two-week long festival of Irene's work alongside plays written by her students from the legendary INTAR Hispanic Playwrights-In-Residence Laboratory. Festival pass holders selected which of the staged readings would be fully produced. Her play The Conduct of Life was chosen and opened on June 8, 2017. Enjoy these memories below from The Conduct of Life and Festival Irene.
